WASHINGTON – When the Fair Housing Act was enacted in 1968, it became pivotal to breaking down housing barriers by addressing discriminatory practices and promoting inclusive communities.
April, designated as Fair Housing Month, serves as an annual reminder of the legislation passed by President Lyndon Johnson a week after the civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. This year marks the 56th year the civil rights law was signed.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability and familial status.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development themed this year’s Fair Housing Month as “Fair Housing: The ‘Act’ in Action.” In the coming month, HUD will be hosting various online events, including training programs.
Additional HUD resources include online toolkits on topics that include:
Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Data and Mapping Tool (AFFH-T), an online mapping and data-generating tool for communities to help with fair housing planning.
Preventing sexual and other discriminatory harassment in housing
Fair Housing obligations
LGBTQIA+ fair housing
